A client who is a very accomplished woodworker and wooden boat builder knew what style of stool he wanted, he had the kauri that he had been storing for over twenty years – but he was struggling to find the time to make the stools himself. Something that was obviously handmade with care was what he wanted and as he had seen my Quatro Stool and Reach Ladder he knew that they could not be mistaken for anything but finely handmade furniture.
The seat height was discussed and fixed at 600mm but the rest he left for me to design. Once the concept drawing was completed, emailed to the client and approved, the preparation of the timber and the making of the stools began.
The making of these stools requires a lot of hand tool use especially in the shaping of the seat hollow out of 50mm solid wood. The stool is wonderfully comfortable to sit on, I use unusual but traditional hand tools like an inshave and travisher to shape the hollow followed by a serious amount of sanding. The legs and spindles are turned on a lathe, and both are wedged in place in the traditional style.
As in all my furniture, close inspection will reveal tight and strong joinery, a remarkable standard of finish that reveals the beauty of the timber selected and the subtle details of hand shaped facets, curves and chamfers.
This stool is available in three seat height options – all dimensions in millimetres:
600 for casual seating, 660 to suit about 900 high kitchen counters, 760 to suit about 1000 high kitchen island and bar counters.
Seat to footrest distance is 400 for all
Seat is 380 wide x 350 for all
Price on application depending on timber.
